Southampton

So on Monday we decided to just spend the day walking around Southampton, taking in the sites and hoping to stumble upon some cool finds without having to take any tours. This meant starting off in the centre of town, and after walking up and down the High street, we made our was to Southampton University. We then stepped off the main roads, and decided to stroll around the less populous streets of the town.

Southampton don't take sh*t

This is where things got interesting. We found a couple of old (think 800 years old) buildings, as well as the remainders of a large wall that existed, surrounding Southampton from sea invaders. Although not much of it is left, we managed to find bits and pieces of it scattered throughout the city!

Southampton Wall: roof not included
In terms of the architecture, Southampton is not as cutting edge or historic as London, but still had its own lessons to offer. Of particular interest was the way they pedestrianized the High street, with a large walkway and public seating. It may not be anything extraordinary, but it is still more than what we have on offer in South Africa in terms of an urban space for pedestrians that incorporates public spaces and parks, municipal buildings, historic sites, a university, a football stadium, commerce and residence - all easily walked to and accessible from the rest of the town via public transport.

Quite thick. So is the wall.
Hit the jump for a few more pictures. Quality isn't great on them because the camera's battery died, but thankfully my phone came to the rescue.

Look how clean my shoes are!
